The best wood for bedroom furniture: beech, blockboard, MDF or chipboard?
By Gallery Elmir, Tripoli, Lebanon · Updated
For a bedroom set that stays straight and solid for years, the best combination is a hardwood such as beech for frames and load-bearing parts, and blockboard (latté) for the large panels, finished in natural wood veneer. MDF and chipboard cost less and give a smooth surface, but they are heavier, hold screws less well and swell if water reaches an unsealed edge. This guide compares the four materials and shows how Gallery Elmir builds its bedroom sets.
Why the material matters in a bedroom
A wardrobe carries heavy shelves and hangs its doors on hinges that open thousands of times a year. A bed frame takes moving loads every night. In coastal Lebanese cities such as Tripoli and Beirut, summer humidity is high, so boards that absorb moisture swell at the edges and lose their grip on screws. The core material decides how a set copes with all of this long after the showroom shine has gone.
Solid beech
Beech is a dense hardwood that makes strong joints and holds screws and dowels firmly, so it suits bed frames, legs, rails and mouldings. Its weakness is width: a very wide panel of solid wood can cup or crack as humidity changes, which is why wardrobe doors and side panels are usually made from a stable board finished in veneer rather than from solid planks.
Blockboard (latté)
Blockboard has a core of solid wood strips between thin outer layers, usually 18 mm thick in total. The strips give it stiffness along their length, so long shelves and tall doors resist sagging, and screws driven into the face hold well. Its exposed edges need edge banding, and quality depends on the core strips and the glue, which is why origin and grade vary between suppliers in the Lebanese market.
MDF
MDF (medium-density fibreboard) is made from fine wood fibres and resin pressed into a dense, smooth board. It paints well and can be routed into decorative door fronts. It is heavy, sags on long unsupported shelves, holds screws poorly in its edges, and swells permanently if water gets into an unsealed edge.
Chipboard (particle board)
Chipboard is made from wood chips bonded with resin and is the cheapest of the four. Faced with melamine, it is the standard material of flat-pack furniture. It has the weakest screw holding, sags under load and crumbles at the edges once it absorbs moisture.
Blockboard vs MDF vs chipboard vs beech: side-by-side
| Material | Screw holding | Long shelves and doors | Moisture | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solid beech | Excellent | Strong, but wide panels can cup | Moves with humidity; needs sealing | Heavy |
| Blockboard (latté) | Good on the face | Resists sagging | Stable; edges need banding | Medium |
| MDF | Weak in edges | Sags over long spans | Swells at unsealed edges | Heavy |
| Chipboard | Weakest | Sags under load | Swells and crumbles | Medium |
Veneer, laminate or melamine on top?
The surface layer matters as much as the core. Natural veneer is real wood; laminate and melamine are printed decor papers that imitate it. Read wood veneer vs solid wood for how to tell them apart.

- Ask whether the panels are blockboard, MDF or chipboard.
- Look inside a drawer: check the sides, the bottom and how the front is fixed.
- Check the back panel of the wardrobe and how it is fastened.
- Ask what the bed frame and slats are made of.

Questions and answers
Is beech wood good for bedroom furniture?
Yes. Beech is a dense hardwood that makes strong joints and holds screws well, so it suits bed frames, legs and rails. For wide wardrobe doors, a stable veneered board such as blockboard stays flatter than wide solid planks.
Is blockboard better than MDF for wardrobes?
For wardrobe doors and long shelves, yes. Blockboard is lighter, holds screws better on its face and resists sagging. MDF is smoother for painted finishes, but it is heavier and swells if water reaches an unsealed edge.
What does latté mean in Lebanese furniture?
Latté is the name used in Lebanon for blockboard: a panel with a core of solid wood strips between thin outer layers, usually 18 mm thick.
What are Gallery Elmir bedroom sets made of?
Gallery Elmir's made-to-order bedroom sets are built from solid beech and blockboard (latté) and finished in natural wood veneer, in the species and colour the customer chooses.
